The spine is often one of the most tense areas of the body. The deeper stretching movement of a friction stroke over the muscles and ligaments running alongside the vertebrae will help to relieve stiffness from your partner's back, enabling him to relax more fully and enjoy the massage. In this movement, the thumb pads are pressed slowly at the top of the back into the grooves either side of the spine, while the hands rest on the body. Lean your weight steadily into the stroke as you slide your thumbs down towards the base of the back. Then glide your hands around his hips, up the sides of the ribcage and over the shoulders to repeat the whole sequence with a deeper level of pressure. To vary the stroke, make small circular movements with your thumbs moving down each side of the spine.
